Box-it Central in Pole Position with Promising Junior Race Kart Drivers
Box-it Central is delighted to be supporting two promising young race-kart drivers. Harry Graham (15) and Craig Evans (12), both from Warwickshire, are competing in the 2018 BirelART UK Series.
Harry, who attends North Leamington School, began his race career when he was just nine years old competing indoors at Mr Karting, where he won the 2013 and 2014 Championship. As part of his prize, Harry was shortlisted and selected out of 20 drivers to win an EasyKart.
Since then, Harry has progressed to the competitive scene of outdoor karting, notching up multiple podium finishes in 2015 to finish 4th overall in the EasyKart UK Series. A further step up the ladder came in 2016, which saw Harry compete in the Junior class with a 100cc engine, which at the time was a huge step up in speed and size of kart. Harry was determined to finish in the top 10, but actually completed the series in 5th place through a number of impressive performances.
Last year proved even more successful for Harry in the newly rebranded BirelART UK series. He pulled out all the stops to clinch 3rd place in the championship and now has his sights firmly set on the top step of the podium for the 2018 series, which started in the spring.
The adverse weather in March meant the scheduled series opener was postponed, but after Round 2 at Llandlow and Round 3 at Clay Pigeon, Harry has already experienced the ‘joy of the podium’. He finished third in the Final at Llandlow. At Clay Pigeon Raceway in Dorset, he raced well and took an early lead in the Final, crossing the line in first place, his first ever win. Harry currently sits in 2nd place in the Championship after two rounds.
“It is great to have the support of sponsors like Box-it Central, who provided me with a new chassis this year. I am also grateful to my other sponsors, Emerald Group, AW Precision, IPS Kitchens and Pentland Accountants whose contributions have made it possible for me to race this year,” says Harry.
Meanwhile, Craig Evans makes his debut in this year’s BirelART UK series in the ‘Cadets’ class vying against 20 drivers, of which 12 are ‘Novices’ and are new to the series. Craig is aiming to be the top Novice in the 2018 series, and has made a promising start to the championship so far.
At Llandow, Craig’s first ever race meeting, Practice Day didn’t go so well. As the day became hotter, the kart engine performance dropped away. With much research and guidance being sort around the paddock that evening a different setting was tried for race day, coupled with a cooler day. Thankfully it worked, and Craig qualified very well to end the day as 3rd Novice and 11th overall in the Championship table.
Then it was off to Clay Pigeon. Again, not the best Practice Day with a big ‘off’ into the tyre wall which did considerable kart damage but thankfully only a shaken driver. Race day proved challenging too; the carburettor failed on the grid but thankfully a replacement carb was fitted while other groups completed their warm up laps. Craig was allowed to go out alone at the end for 4 laps to qualify for the day, qualifying in 10th place.
Craig’s races through the day were very hard fought especially between several of the Novices and some experienced guys. Un-deterred, Craig fought hard in every race, and there was some real tense action, especially in the final with very close racing against a couple of very experienced drivers. Craig finished ahead of one therefore taking 8th place but most important, claiming the Top Novice trophy for the round.
Due to the consistent positions throughout the day meant Craig is now 8th in the championship table.
Craig, who attends Warwick Boys Senior School has only been karting since November and despite being relatively inexperienced, is certainly making his mark, having spent as much practice time as possible at Whilton Mill during the winter in preparation for the season.
Box-it Central’s sister business, Squab Group is also a sponsor of Craig, along with Warwick Signs who are supplying the graphics for the kart.
We wish both Harry and Craig all the very best of luck for the season. The next Round (4) is at Fulbeck on 2nd-3rd June. Box-it Central will be cheering you both on all the way!
